Record App

Evoca TV provides a unique experience to end users by providing their favorite regional sports teams over the air. This experience is coupled with the ability to record those same teams. With the tap of a button, users can opt-in to record all events that are televised via Evoca TV so that you can view them later.

When tasked with this project, I was told to come at it from an experience that I would want to have rather than updating the existing infrastructure. The intention would be that the entire app would be re-written by our engineering team since we were transitioning to Google TV application instead of the previous third-party service. With this in mind, I did some research on similar apps provided by Netflix, Hulu, Fubo TV, YouTube TV, etc. The closest to our use case was Hulu with their ability to view 'Live TV' in a traditional grid view, along with the 'Live Now' category based view. I felt that this experience would benefit our users in two ways.

  1. They would still have the traditional grid view that cable, satellite and many streaming services still offer.
  2. They would also be able to quickly open the app to view only the teams in their region along with the recordings of only their sporting events.

Here are a few of the mock-ups that I put together to showcase the layout, design, typography, and colors I wanted to implement. It stays within the constraints of the branding guidelines while also providing a familiar experience to other well-known streaming services.

Our team struggled with the idea of either showing a layout with dedicated Teams based on region or by sport. We intended on A-B testing these two options when it was built to see which view users prefer.

The initial view of the event would showcase the ability to record the individual event or opt-in to recording all events by regional team. This was a 'set it and forget it' approach that we thought would be beneficial during sports such as basketball and baseball where there are multiple events each week during season. Another idea that I had was to implement the team schedules along with other team specific metadata that we are ingesting so that users can get more details of the team without having to leave this view. These views would also allow for additional navigation options to view the team 'Landing' page that would provide a space to show records, schedules, some stats and other information to help make the most well-rounded sporting experience on TV.

To be continued...

This project is ongoing as we discuss further requirements and obtain feedback from stakeholders. Having the ability to visualize the layout/design/brand of the prototypes has helped stakeholders address areas they may not have thought about during the PRD discussions. This is what I love about mock-ups, the ability to visually see a concept, discuss, and iterate on questions that come up during review. This process helps alleviate wasted development time while also providing a visual aid to stakeholders, a win-win for everyone involved.
